New OHSAS upgrade within Work Environment Management Systems

Employees and interested parties within various industries have for a long time exerted pressure at management level around the world to stress the importance of the work environment in the workplace. We can see significant differences in a safe workplace, not only within directly exposed industries such as construction and civil engineering, the engineering industry or road transport, but also within the service sector.

Social responsibility is a good investment for companies. A major commitment to health and safety issues by a management team motivates personnel, which in turn increases productivity. Greater commitment and focus on the work environment visibly reduces accidents and absences due to injuries and illness, which also helps to reduce direct and indirect costs.

Early lobbying during the 1990s led to a project group publishing the first internationally recognised standard for the work environment OHSAS or Specification on Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series: OHSAS 18001:1999 in 1999.

As with all standards, this one also required updating. During 2006, a project group revised OHSAS 18001:1999. A new OHSAS 18001:2007 standard was published in 2007.

The new standard OHSAS 18001:2007 is better suited to the structures contained in ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001.2004. This means that it is now easier to integrate these management systems and that work to maintain a high level of focus on the work environment has been simplified. OHSAS 18001:2007 also focuses more on results that previously.

LRQA can, with advantage, carry out integrated audits (quality – the environment – health & safety – food) of your management system, which results in efficient, cost-saving audits.

LRQA issues first TAPA certificate within EMEA area

May 1, 2008, LONDON

- Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA), a member of the Lloyd’s Register Group, has released its first Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) Freight Security Requirements (FSR) certificate in the EMEA Area.

TAPA is a unique forum that unites global manufacturers, freight carriers, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders with the common aim of reducing losses from international supply chains. With its FSR programme TAPA has created a qualitative standard of best practices that enables different levels of classification according to threat levels. Multi-national manufacturers and distributors include FSR certification in their contractual agreements and transport providers increasingly refer to it as the global benchmark.

After being chosen as one of only four global certification bodies to deliver TAPA certification LRQA has recently issued its first TAPA A certificate in the EMEA area to Partner Logistics Europe in the Netherlands. Partner Logistics is a European based logistic service provider to the food and high tech industry.

LRQA has been a provider of TAPA FSR services in Asia since 2006 and is now set to deliver the TAPA services all across the EMEA area. LRQA now has assessors trained throughout Europe and the Middle East according to the TAPA organisation’s training requirements. Together with the vast experience LRQA has gained from carrying out audits to assess compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility (ISPS) code, TAPA FSR in Asia and ISO 28000; LRQA is has established itself as a leading service provider for Supply Chain Security verification services world-wide.

For further information on LRQA supply chain services, please contact:

Asia: Paul Phyall Paul.Phyall@lr.org
EMEA: Ronald de Kok Ronald.deKok@lr.org
Americas: Dave Hadlet Dave.Hadlet@lr.org

LRQA Media contact details:
Alex Briggs, Marketing Communications Manager
MSBS, LRQA CentreHiramford, Middlemarch Office Village, Siskin Drive, Coventry,
CV3 4FJTel: +44 (0) 24 7688 2382
Email: alex.briggs@lrqa.com
